In the "quasi-Class IV" and "quasi-Class III" upgrade of municipal wastewater treatment plants, total nitrogen (TN) compliance is a common challenge. When the influent biodegradable carbon source (BOD5) is insufficient, denitrifying bacteria lack electron donors, limiting denitrification efficiency and causing TN exceedance.
Adding an external carbon source can supplement the deficit and increase denitrification rate.
